Intaglio Printing Process

Intaglio Printing Process – (Italian for "cut in") A method of printing in which the image is carved or bitten by acid into a metal plate, usually copper, so that the areas to be inked are recessed beneath the surface of the printing plate. For intaglio printing, the ink is forced into this cut or bitten image, the surface of the plate is wiped clean or evened out, the paper is dampened and both the plate and the paper are run together (squeezed) under pressure through the etching press. The ink fills only
the recessed areas of the plate. The printed lines of an intaglio print
stand in relief on the paper. Intaglio prints have platemarks.
The main intaglio processes:
 Line Engraving - The image is produced by cutting or gouging a
metal plate directly with a sharp tool.
 Drypoint - Drawing on the metal plate with a hard steel "pencil"
that produces a burr by displacing, rather than removing metal, causing the printed line to be somewhat fuzzy thus adding a richness to the
image. Because this wears during printing, editions are usually limited
to 50 or fewer prints.
 Etching - A metal plate is first covered with an acid-resistant ground, then worked with an etching needle. The metal exposed by the needle is "eaten" in an acid bath, creating the recessed image.

What is an Abbrescia Giclee Print ?

Giclee (pronounced "gee-clay") is the term used for what is currently the most advanced digital fine art printmaking technology. High quality digital images are created from the original artwork and printed with 8-color to 12-color professional printers and archival quality inks onto various surfaces. The giclée printing process provides incredibly detailed prints that last longer (in excess of 120 years) and have a brighter, crisper gamut of color that is far beyond that of lithography, producing a print that is rival to the original painting.
In giclee printing, no screen or other mechanical devices are used and therefore there is no visible dot screen pattern. The image has all the tonalities and hues of the original painting.
Giclee prints can be produced on many substrates, including canvas and paper. Abbrescia Fine Art usually chooses to print on canvas. By printing on canvas, the prints are rival only to the original oil painting as they have the same color and the texture is very near the original. Giclee art prints on canvas are also intended to be hung the same as an original painting, without glass. In many cases, a giclee art print on canvas is mistaken for an original.
Canvas prints are much more durable than paper prints as they do not crease when rolled for mailing and do not tear or get crumpled as easily.
Giclee art prints can be made in various sizes up to and including the size of the original painting without any contortion. Joe Abbrescia completed many large paintings such as 40" x 60" and even larger for private commissions.
We invite you to browse our giclee art prints as we have many sizes and prices available.
Each Giclée canvas will be shipped ready to be stretched and framed (without glass, just like an original painting) by your local professional framer.
Thanks for your interest!
